Frequently Asked Questions

What is the process for bringing my child to work with Lumos?

Step 1: Schedule a free phone consultation (linked here!) where you will tell me about your child and ask me any questions you have.
Step 2: Schedule a student assessment for your child. This will be a 2-hour block of time where I give your child an assessment in either math or literacy to help me know what they need and give my recommendations for them moving forward.
Step 3: We will work on finding a good weekly time that I can see your child (Ex. Mondays and Wednesdays from 3-4 pm). We will choose a start date and get started!

How long will it be before I see progress in my child?

First, it’s important to keep in mind that all kids learn differently and at different rates. Some students may just require a few more repetitions than their peers and may take off with the new approach. Some may have slower processing speeds and working memory and need quite a bit more time before the learning will take root.

For multisensory math, I would expect to see the beginning of progress for a few math concepts within 8-10 sessions (about 2 months). All will not improve immediately, but math allows for specific concepts to show mastery in a way that literacy does not. While they will not catch up to their peers with 8-10 sessions, you will likely notice improvements with a few specific math skills that will then be built on. To help the average elementary student really show big strides, it can often take about a year of work.

For kids learning to read though, the skill of literacy has so many complex layers. It can be difficult to see strides quickly because, while they will have learned new reading and spelling rules, that does not mean their average reading and spelling experiences will look very different. This is because the new skills they have learned so far are a small subset of the whole package needed to nudge literacy growth forward. It can take many months of new learning, repetitions of previous lessons, and application to whole texts for struggling readers to be demonstrably improving. Students achieve best and longest lasting results when they complete the full Take Flight program, which takes on average 2 years.

How will I stay apprised of my child’s progress?

For all my clients I sent daily or weekly notes about what was worked on and any successful or difficult parts for the student, as well as any homework. That will always give you a quick look at what we do each day and keep you in the loop.

For more thorough information about your child’s progress, I provide comprehensive progress monitoring every 3 months. You are able to choose if you would like this to be in person, over Zoom, or in an email. This will include specific skills your child is showing progress in, where they are having trouble spots that need extra review, and what else you can do at home that will help your student grow. This also includes an assessment with your child every 3 months.

How much are sessions and how will I pay?

Each session is €85 and you are billed monthly in advance of your child’s upcoming sessions. If you know before being billed any sessions you are unable to make (due to travel, holidays, etc.), those will be removed from the calendar and you will not be charged.
